Frequently Asked Questions: Mini Jetboats

Welcome to the world of Mini Jetboats! These mini-sized powerhouses are taking the boating world by storm. On this FAQ page you can find everything you need to know about getting started with this sport.

What is a Mini Jetboat?

A Mini Jetboat is a small (usually 2.5 to 4 meters long), highly maneuverable watercraft designed for shallow water and technical rivers. Unlike traditional boats with outboard propellers, these use an internal jet pump. This allows them to skim over just centimeters of water and jump over obstacles that would destroy a standard engine.

What engines do Mini Jetboats use?

Most mini jetboats are powered by PWC (Personal Watercraft) engines – the same ones found in waterscooters. Common choices include:

  • Two-Stroke Engines: Lighter and easier to maintain, often sourced from older Kawasaki or Yamaha skis.
  • Four-Stroke Engines: More powerful, fuel-efficient, and quieter, typically sourced from modern Sea-Doos or Yamahas.
  • Horsepower: Usually ranges from 60 hp to over 300 hp in high-end custom builds.

Can I build my own Mini Jetboat?

Yes, absolutly! In fact, the “DIY” spirit is a huge part of the community. Most owners buy a pre-cut aluminum hull kit (check my webshop for cnc cut packages) and source a donor waterscooter for the engine, pump, and electronics. It requires welding skills, mechanical knowledge, and a fair bit of patience. Additionally you can get in touch for welded hulls or turn-key vessels, if you do not want to start from sratch or build your own.

Can I buy plans / CAD files?

At the moment WSJB does not sell plans or dxf files. We sell cnc pre-cut Do It Yourself kits or high quality welded hulls. Additionally you get in touch for turn-key boats as well.

Do I need a license to drive a Mini Jetboat?

In te European region, if a boat exceeds a speed of 20 km/h, or is between 15 and 24 mtr length, an ICC boating license is mandatory.

  • Most Mini Jetboats will easily go faster then 20km/h which indicates an ICC license is required.
  • Because mini jetboats are high-performance craft, we always recommend taking a safety course regardless of the law.

Do I need to register my Mini Jetboat?

Yes. In almost all jurisdictions, any motorized vessel must be registered with the local maritime or transport authority. If you build it yourself, you will often need to apply for a WIN (Watercraft Identification Number) and provide proof of the engine’s origin (bill of sale from the donor craft).

Are there any special rules for the use of Mini Jetboats?

While they are boats, their unique capabilities come with specific responsibilities:

  • Environmental Impact: Because they can access shallow areas, be mindful of nesting birds and fish spawning grounds.
  • Noise Levels: High-performance engines can be loud; always check local noise ordinances and keep exhaust dampers installed.
  • Safety Gear: Life jackets (PFDs) are a must. Because these boats are used in rocky rivers, many pilots also wear helmets and specialized impact gear.
  • Right of Way: Same as when driving on the road, you must follow the standard rules for watercrafts, when sharing space with larger vessels.

How can I ensure I am boating responsibly?

Owning a mini jetboat comes with the responsibility to protect our waterways and the reputation of the boating community.
